Lights, Camera, and other stuff

I started the day going back to an old video about how to add new actions to the character, because the last time I did the tutorial I accidentally deleted a file that made me lose my progress halfway through. This time I was able to follow while adding it to my prototype, hopefully this time the lesson will stick. With this I can slowly build towards more complicated actions such as pulling out the lantern and thwacking with the whip.

After getting one punch down, I wanted to see if I could play around with physics despite not knowing anything about it yet. It’s quite obvious what happened next when I tried to build a whip prototype. It was stiff and when it wasn’t it wouldn’t stay in the hand.

I’ve found some lectures on physics, that’s on the agenda for tomorrow. Also in consideration is taking an actual online class on Unreal, but there are also some other free introduction videos on YouTube. They are pretty long since Unreal is vast, I’ll get to it this week. I started browsing more of the free assets in the Unreal market and I got a lot of cool stuff I can’t wait to play around with. Many distractions that will also help inspire the look of the game. I lost my internet for awhile so I took lots of cool screenshots to behold while I was playing around in the editor.

First, most of these are the free assets I found to be intriguing. I ended using the water one today, and the rest of the week I’ll probably try each one to see how they work. Unreal runs on C++ and they say you can create a whole game on just Blueprints, the visual scripting language of Unreal. Though I feel it would only be right if I learned both. I at least learned C, the father (grandfather?) of C++ and many other languages. I’m confident C++ will be just as confusing.

Anyway screenshots. Playing around has showed me I will end up with a camera set further away from the character so you can appreciate the surroundings more.

The noir aesthetic is sort of there. With the strong lights and long shadows. If you want to see the prototype run around and punch check it here.

GG out.
