Trail blazin’

One of the free assets in Unreal’s marketplace this month was this awesome VFX trail effects. I contacted them to teach me how to use it and they were quick to reply saying that due to high demand they’d be releasing a video on how to implement it. Today I spent a lot of time playing with the different effects and adding it to the boss and the player character.

It was very straight forward, just stick some sockets and add the effects on animations. I tried to add effects to the whip attacks but I think I won’t keep it, doesn’t look appropriate to the action. The trail for the dodge is quite cool, and the attacks of the boss looks even more menacing. I went back to the Target System I played with awhile back and put it back into the game. I didn’t want to keep it so it wasn’t too easy to aim the whip, but now when you lock-on the crosshair is not right on the target. I’d consider it a downside of locking on to the target, you have to get close and favor the right side so you can get the crosshair aligned. Now that I’ve decided to implement a target lock system I’m highly considering giving the player melee attacks, that way you have more options at close range and you don’t always have to aim the whip. It will make the combat more dynamic and fun, and of course give me more work to do.

And if I have melee attacks for the player character then I can use the sweet sweet vfx trails on it. It’s gonna be a busy week.
