Power was out most of the day yesterday because of a typhoon. I got up today with a flaming rage to work. Which is apt, because I added flame projectiles today. I dug through the crash logs, it wasn’t very deep and I noticed the TargetSystem pop up at least twice. I removed it from the game, and the project started up fine. It’s a few steps back, but I needed to take it out so I could continue working on the game. Next week I’ll instead make a target system from scratch instead of using the plug-in that was causing issues. My goal for this session was to finish off the boss. I bought an animation set from the marketplace that was nearly perfect for my boss. I had to adjust its speed, now it only walks, but now its more menacing and it gave me the idea to give it the ability to shoot fire waves. I played around with a few effects, some were very cool but too extreme. I went with one that looked most appropriate and I watched a quick video on projectile movement in Unreal.
After some tweaking the wave shoots pretty well, and it can be difficult to dodge. The arena is dressed up with lots of props, and the boss is at a decent difficulty. It just needs some tweaking with the numbers, for its health and the player’s health. But beyond that the boss has decent AI and a lot of different moves to choose from. If I feel the need to give it more actions it should be easy enough. I had an issue with the hammer since it kept clipping/passing-through the floor. For a moment I considered replacing it with a sword instead, since the waves might work better with the sword. But I am a big fan of the big hammer so I adjusted the size and angle a bit more to better fit the model’s hand and it looks just right.
It was frustrating not being able to work the past two days, but it was also nice to get a clear mind and a fresh reset on what I need to do. Next week is the sound update. The game looks good, but the sound is important for so much of the feel of the game. Exciting developments coming soon.
