Whip cracks and footsteps

I already knew why games need sound designers. It’s an extremely important part of the game, and another complex rabbit hole. At this point I have been going down many rabbit holes to create the foundation of the game, and I know I’m not very deep into many of them. As expected there aren’t a lot of screenshots that will accompany this post because I was focused on incorporating sound. I have some videos lined up on music too. Luckily back when I was working on my 2D games I came across freesound.org. Great site with tons of free sounds. I found a whip crack sound that fits almost perfectly, and I found a footstep sound that should work for now. It was very straightforward to have different footstep sounds depending on the surface that the character is walking on.

I’m not sure exactly what it is yet, but the sounds seem a bit off. Maybe because they’re not as clean as I want them to be. Since a lot of the free soundbites aren’t all masterpieces. I will work with what I got, or eventually figure out how to make my own sounds. For now I got sounds for the landing, walking/running, whip, dodge/dash, and the taking out and putting back of the lantern. I also included an eerie ambient noise to the background, and I might try to work on a simple music piece as a placeholder for the level.

I need to attach sounds to the boss as well, but I need it to be very different and distinct from the player. A giant menacing bloke with a big hammer. He’s got to have heavy footsteps. If I could figure out how make echoes that would be awesome.

I adjusted a lot of the blueprints as well so that a lot of the actions are dictated by the animation itself, with notifies. Previously I had the actions linked together with delays, so even if you broke out of the animation the grapple/swing would still shoot. Based on how the whip worked I thought the grapple and swing should work the same way, and it will look smoother as well. As I continue to learn and refine the game, I truly hope it will be publishable one day.
