There’s definitely something fun about hitting the boss with the chair. It’s not too hard to do it and I think I like it that way, even with a controller it is possible. I gave the boss two new attacks and I tried out a blue color for his armor so he doesn’t blend too well into the environment. I want him to pop out so it’s easy to see him. Readability and clarity is very important to me when it comes to the game, so I always wanna keep the visuals in mind even in these early stages so I won’t have too much of a hard time later on.
The supercharge attack or strong attack, not sure what to call it yet, was a bit lackluster. I found a cool effect to add to the lantern and a great hit effect too. Accompanied with a nice charging sound I got from freesound.org, the attack feels better and more satisfying to land. Since it’s a slow attack with a downward swipe the boss may dodge it. It’s up to the player to find the right time to use it if they want to hit with the attack. I also tweaked some effects on the boss so even the flame of the hammer emits sound if you are close enough. I went back to watching some videos on handling knockdown mechanics and I found something else that was useful. I found a way to loop certain sections of montages, which is very useful for things such as corpses and anything that needs to keep playing until a certain condition is met. I still haven’t figured out how to put in the knockdown yet, but I know I need to add it somewhere. Especially with the heavy hammer hits.
Besides that I added more effects of the lantern super charge. While it is super charged the player will do more damage overall. So it gives the player more options of what to do, use the super charge or keep it for the damage and shorter dodge cooldown? Hopefully this will bring more variety since there are more options for how to play. Then I took some cool shots of the strong attack mid air. It looks quite badass.
I think the character is in a good place in terms of mechanics and options for playstyle. There’s a lot I want to add to the boss so it does more things besides swinging the hammer.
