A journal entry

No screenshots of development. For today I worked on the story aspect of the game. Fleshing out more of the details of the world, the lore and its rules. I am a writer first before a game developer. It was about time I started writing again. Most of the story will be revealed in the game, upfront and hidden in between things to pay attention to. What I’d like to show is a journal entry I made that helps explain the Haunters a bit more.

Entry 1

Light envelops all. These words were written on the first page of a journal the great Iron Hawk left for us. Scrawled upon the dilapidated pages he spoke of a being called the Prime Illuminator. It gifted him with the power that we Haunters now wield in our lanterns.

The light consumes, it remembers. It shreds darkness, piercing through thick mists, flowing through tight cracks, dancing across endless waters, and scattering across an  unreachable sky. A Haunter is bound by oath to their lantern. This sacred tradition is only possible because of the Primelight. That is what he called it in his notes. Only those who have it can pass it on to another. The light must always have a source.

There is still so much we don’t understand about these abilities. Early on in our training the most important lesson we are taught is how to link ourselves to a source of illumination. Containing a portion of our Primelight means we can return to it should we ever be extinguished. The lantern is an imperfect vessel, it will dim ever so slightly the more it is used. Perhaps that was intended in its design, to avoid giving us immortality but to bring us dangerously close to it.

A Haunter must be near perfect in his virtues. For it is written that the light is not discerning, so in its stead we must be watchful. This means that only very few students make it to the oath taking. It is common knowledge that there is nothing more dangerous than a rogue Haunter.

When I return from the darkness, the small beads of light reforming me as perfectly as it recalls, am I the same person? Or am I someone new every time? The Primelight returns our memories to us, so that must also mean it can take them away. Although for now I see no reason for it to do such a thing. Since it has no notion of good or evil. It does not waver nor falter. It can be trusted not to change.

I will definitely write more entries because it helps with understanding the world from the perspective of someone within it. The world itself I already have a good idea of what’s going on.
