Made a whole new model in blender using the base models I have for all my characters in my game. Since I can’t do faces at all everyone is gonna have masks! It is a fairly simple model with a cool looking cowl/cape. Once I put it in Unreal I painted the cloth physics on and it worked like a charm. Went over to mixamo to pick up a handful of animations for the weapon I knew he would be using which was a large blade.
Then I plugged in the new animations into the animation blueprint for the boss, his name is Felix. While updating all these things I also updated the base objects I had to make sure they had all the things I was adding. For example I forgot I was using direction for the first boss to drive the different animations, I can use that all the time.
I made sure to add more important comments to remind me every time I made something new. I tested him out in game and he moved very smoothly. With his basic movement done I needed to give him basic attacks as well. So I quickly put together a big sword for him and blender and slapped it right in his hands. Large and shiny. I made sure that his wasn’t blocked by the sword either. Then I took the basics from the first boss and added it to the base as well because it has the necessary logic for attacking the player. It also has other important events. And for special cases I can always adjust it and/or along with removing/adding anything.
With all the functionality plugged into the blueprint to make sure it can hurt the player I created the montage for the attacks and put the logic to make sure it dealt damage at the right time. I also made sure the time shadows were there along with it so I don’t forget, and it’s an easy workflow.
Made sure it had all the proper montages for getting hit and dying as well. Then I realized I could add simple logic so you couldn’t interact with a dead body, so I added it to the death of the enemies. Before you could still hit it and even run into it, now it is just a body that you can’t affect.
I’ll be continuing working on the boss’ attacks and other animations. Currently it has trouble moving right after I flip the stage over so I will figure out what I can do to fix that as well. Overall a very productive day and I am super happy with the progress made.
