I got sidetracked before starting to record some of the voice lines. I couldn’t stop thinking about how it is unclear when the player won’t be able to use the shield. Since there are no numbers I decided to add an icon to the resource bar that will show up when the player has enough light to block, and it will disappear when it is below that number.
From opengameart.org I found a free shield that I made into a plain color. I used purple at first then tested out how visible it would be with the different icons. In the end I went with white. It didn’t look great on the light resource bar so I stuck it in the center of the lantern indicator. Hopefully this will help communicate to the player when they do not have enough light to block with the shield.
With that out of the way I had to decide the plan for the voice lines. I decided that I want it to have some hints story wise and even clue wise, but I don’t want it to be too important just in case players don’t die that often. I don’t want to punish players who will miss out on hearing a line because they did well, that would be counterintuitive. I base the voice line on the number of deaths the player has, at a certain point it will repeat the same line. That way I don’t have to record too many and it won’t become too important. I do expect some people to die a few times, especially with the later bosses that require more thinking outside of the box.
I made sure there were voice lines for the first two stages. My voice and throat got tired so I will start recording the lines for the third stage tomorrow.
The death animation had been bugging me for awhile, and the visual effects were broken. I fixed it by copying the logic from another function and also I replaced the animation with one from the new asset I bought. The sounds didn’t match up well so I changed its timing and I removed a few of the unnecessary effects. It came out looking a lot better.
Tomorrow I will finish up recording the voice lines I need for the last stage. Then I will think about adding some more interesting mechanics changes or improvements.
