Cat development

Much of the work I’ve been working on this week and for the foreseeable future will be in the realm of spoiler territory. As I am on the final chapter of the game I want to keep it under wraps as long as I can unless I need to use it for marketing eventually.

So instead of talking about the super-secret stuff I’ve been grinding on, I can talk about the other work I did. Some time this week was dedicated to the cat. It just made sense to me that there would be a cat in this dream world. They are famously asleep most of the day.

An important part of game development is research, and I have done my part by serving and spoiling my cats. I’m adding layers of logic and magic to the game cat so it acts like a real cat. She will now hiss at you sometimes and always successfully jump out of your hands when she doesn’t want to be held anymore.

As much as I love working on the vital parts of the game, I do relish the moments when I take a break and work on the more “cozy” side of this project. I suppose I could give some spoilers for the cat. She will appear randomly in your room, and if you have any furniture, she may be found asleep on it when she “spawns.”

I am working on a very “robust” relationship system wherein the cat will take time to warm up to you. Anyone who is familiar with cats knows that it is quite a rarity for them to be comfortable with strangers. While you pick her up, you can feed her with your experience points. You can also try to get her to follow you around or sit down. Randomly she may get the zoomies and rush around the room. She will also sometimes meow when you pet her, but of course, she will mostly hiss at first. My future plans include making her able to play and jump onto things.

Have I considered adding more than 1 cat? Yes, I have, but as a solo developer, I like to keep things simple and relatively sane, especially because there isn’t much sanity in being a solo developer to begin with.

Should I start adding sign-offs to this thing?
