As I had been thinking about all weekend I started out with trying to work on a feature that highlighted points the player could swing or grapple from. Since I recently learned how to highlight objects, this wouldn’t be so different. An issue I had at first was that if you panned the camera fastContinueContinue reading “Highlighting and Unpacking”

Starting new rooms
I spent the time that I had finishing up three more rooms. They are dressed up, and have at least one item that can be inspected. My idea is that each room will match the personality of the professor I have in my head. Do they call them professors in special police academies? Well, it’sContinueContinue reading “Starting new rooms”
Inspection achieved
Today I was able to implement a game mechanic that will be a huge part of the game. It was easy for the most part, and I’m so happy I was able to find the perfect tutorial for it. It follows the camera, it has text, it blurs the background. I was able to addContinueContinue reading “Inspection achieved”
Set Dressing
Finally got to start and finish this class Unreal had on setting up a scene from scratch. It was focused on building a detective’s office which was perfect considering the subject matter of my game. A lot of the props from the tutorial I decided to use for populating my first room. Hopefully I willContinueContinue reading “Set Dressing”
Fixing the criss-cross
It was a rather busy day today outside of developing the game so I wasn’t able to get much done in terms of anything really. I figured it was a good time to fix my comments on a lot of the functions and make sure wires that didn’t need to cross were cleaned up. SinceContinueContinue reading “Fixing the criss-cross”
Windows and things!
I did some work late last night on finishing touches of the interior accents. I continued today on adding window frames. So I had to go back to all the windows I added and replace them. It is a chore but at least it gives me time to listen to a podcast while I doContinueContinue reading “Windows and things!”
Doors!
A small but important update today. I added doors! For now they open automatically when the player is near, and only in one direction which is fine. I might leave it that way so the player knows which rooms they have visited. I’ve also started adding more detail to the main hall. A railing, accentsContinueContinue reading “Doors!”
New Room?
I had a rather busy day today so didn’t get as much as I wanted done. Learned some new stuff from a quick video that Unreal did on exposure. Since the camera acts like a real camera with shutter speed, iso, and aperture it helps that I have some background in that. The issues withContinueContinue reading “New Room?”
Foggy foggy night
The developers at Unreal recommend that you work on lighting last, which is great advice especially when you still have to plan what to add to the level. I can’t help but adjust the knobs though, since so much of my game’s aesthetic is based on the lighting. I finished adding all the rooms toContinueContinue reading “Foggy foggy night”
Drafting the hall
It has been awhile since I used my tablet, I’m not sure how old it is. It could easily be 12 years at this point. I drew a rough sketch of the level I want to layout, and I based it on a building I made for DnD. The name of the first level shallContinueContinue reading “Drafting the hall”
